Dear Bonnie Brae Elementary School Staff, Parents, and Community Members,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Jason Skerker, current assistant principal at Virginia Run Elementary School, has been selected as the new principal of Bonnie Brae Elementary School effective September 25, 2020.

Mr. Skerker began his educational career with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) as an elementary school teacher, working for ten years collectively at Newington Forest Elementary School, Oak View Elementary School and Graham Road Elementary School. He transitioned to the administrative path in his career in 2010 when he was appointed assistant principal at Hunters Wood Elementary School. During his time at Hunters Wood, Mr. Skerker initiated collaborative learning visits to build teacher efficacy with a focus on cultivating student engagement. He started a mentoring program that targeted their at-risk students that provided academic support and character education. He also served as the ESY principal at the Hunters Woods ESY site.

In 2013, Mr. Skerker became the assistant principal at Virginia Run Elementary School. During his tenure at Virginia Run, Mr. Skerker was instrumental in transitioning the school from Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to Responsive Classroom (RC). He initiated Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) core and clinical teams that improved core instruction through the work of curriculum teams. He also initiated, trained and implemented the Positivity Project to increase student morale and strengthen their relationships with school staff. He ensured school goals and needs of students and faculty are met through effective communication and collaboration with all stakeholders – faculty, staff, students, families and community members.

Mr. Skerker looks forward to leading a school with strong ties to the community.  He is passionate about improving outcomes for all students.  His experiences in varied schools and settings coupled with his warm and caring personality prepare him well to serve the Scotty Dog family.   Jason and wife have two daughters and their dog, Rumble.   He is active in youth sports, basketball and swimming, and is an active supporter of the arts.

Mr. Skerker holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from State University of New York at Fredonia and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from George Mason University.

Mr. Skerker and Acting Principal, Kristin Bennink, will be in close coordination to ensure a smooth transition.

Please join me in welcoming Jason Skerker as the new principal at Bonnie Brae Elementary School.
