Positivity Project for Families

Families can find resources to help continue the discussion of character strengths at home by visiting the Positivity Project for Families webpage.

A few amazing highlights that happened this week...

Students in Mrs. Clark's first grade class were creative and critical thinkers as they created a color, symbol, and image to represent a feeling. Way to use your imagination to think about new ideas!

Ms. Browning's students enjoyed celebrating Leap Day!

March 5 Presidential Primary

The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.

Therefore, March 5 will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day. As outlined in Regulation 4421, School Planning Days are directed by school-based Administrators in order to devote time to school improvement efforts, including collaboration around data, common assessments, responsive instruction, etc.

Central offices and school offices will remain open. SACC will remain open, as on other professional work days.

Attendance is Critical for Academic Success!

Regular attendance can help students be successful at school, graduate on time, and achieve their life goals. If students miss too much school, school staff may contact them to work with them to support improved attendance. Visit the FCPS attendance website for attendance resources.

Read Across America

March 4-March 8, we will celebrate Read Across America Week with a Spirit Week!  Show your spirit each day and celebrate your love of reading. View the Read Across America Spirit Week flyer for more details.

Monday, March 4 - Reading Makes Life More Colorful: Wear your favorite color!

Wednesday, March 6 - Let's Get Reading: Read a book with your favorite color in the title or on the cover.

Thursday, March 7 - Hats Off to Reading: Wear your favorite hat!

Friday, March 8 - Cozy Up with a Good Book: Bring a stuffed animal and read to them (stuffed animal must fit in backpack).

Ramadan

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact our family liaison, Santanish Chang at [email protected] regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection space and times, and instruction.

National Women’s History Month

Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history.  Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Purple Up! on April 17 to Support Military Families

Join our community and turn FCPS purple on Purple Up! Day, Wednesday, April 17. Wear purple in recognition of FCPS’ 14,000 enrolled military-connected students.

Purple Up! T-shirts are available for purchase through Friday, March 8.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Our school typically conducts kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring during March or April. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.

Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sunday

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students. Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 -6 during February 28–March 7. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link:

https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener

If you have any questions, please reach out to our SEL Screener Lead, Cori Lonnett, at [email protected].

Join a Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Wednesday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14.

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.

Fiscal Year 2025 Proposed Budget Focused on Educational Excellence and Competitive Compensation

At the last School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 that focuses on excellence and providing students an equitable education in an inclusive and respectful environment, where access, opportunity, and achievement are available to all.

The budget also prioritizes competitive compensation to attract and retain a world-class workforce.

The FY 2025 Proposed Budget totals $3.8 billion, an increase of $301.8 million, or 8.6%, over the FY 2024 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction. Key highlights include:

  • Supporting students academically by maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students.
  • Retaining and attracting world-class educators with a 6% market scale adjustment.
  • Strengthening student well-being outside of the classroom with expanded athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.
  • Continuing initiatives including expansion of inclusive preschool, adoption of green initiatives, and funding assistant director of student activities positions previously funded with ESSER III.

Special education daily contract extensions, funding for the safety and security screening program, and late buses to support academics and activities at middle schools are several of the priorities to be addressed at the end of FY 2024.

The School Board is scheduled to adopt the Advertised Budget on Thursday, February 22. Read more about the proposed budget. Keep up with FCPS’ budget development process

Hello, Scottie families!

Renovation is around the corner, and our students have been enjoying the relocated and newly opened temporary playground this week!  Last night at the Bonnie Brae school construction community meeting we learned more information and updates to our impending renovation.  The BBES renovation website is linked here, and the slideshow from last night is available on the website. Construction is expected to begin sometime this month, with an estimated completion date of summer, 2026.  As always, we will share renovation related information with the community as soon as we receive it.

We are looking forward to two awesome family events coming up, the PTO Glow Dance next Friday (February 9, 6-9 PM) and our Valentine's Day Luncheon, in which we "spread the love" on Valentine's Day, February 14. Full details on these events, including the Valentine's Day lunch schedule, below!

Have a great weekend with your family and friends, Scotties!

Students in Mrs. Hovey's class participated in their Biomimicry PBL Showcase.

Importance of Attendance and Attendance Report Card

This is the time of year when winter weather and children’s illnesses can take a toll on school attendance. However, when not sick, it’s important to get your children to school every day possible. Do what you can to keep your children healthy. Dress them warmly for the cold weather. Encourage them to wash their hands regularly and send them to school with hand sanitizer.

Visit our website for more attendance resources.

To support families with understanding the importance of attendance, we will soon be sending home quarterly attendance progress reports.  Regular school attendance is critical to student growth and success, and we appreciate your efforts to ensure students attend school when they are not sick.

Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Learn more about Black History month.

Here Comes the Bus

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to [email protected].

Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.

Get Information About Your Child’s Internet Activity on Their FCPS Laptop

There is a online service that is free to FCPS parents who are interested in knowing more about their child’s internet activity on an FCPS device. Parents can sign up to receive a weekly Parent Report from Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, which will provide a list of the top sites the child visited that week.

Additionally, if parents wish to get more detailed information, the weekly Parent Report offers parents the ability to self-sign-up to the free Internet Use Parent Portal. Parents who sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal can log-in any time to see a little more detail about their child’s internet browsing. The portal also offers the parent added ability to “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours on the FCPS device.

Interested parents can submit a request directly via the Technology Support for Families page for weekly Parent Reports. FCPS will validate the enrolling parent’s email in SIS, and once processed, the parent will receive a weekly report over each weekend. The weekend report will come from our internet content filtering service, Lightspeed.

Kindergarten students enjoyed playing on the recently opened playground!

Support Our Scotties Direct Donation Drive -- EXTENDED TO 2/16/2024!!!

The Bonnie Brae PTO direct donation drive "Support our Scotties" has been extended to 2/16/2024! There's still time to make a direct impact, where ALL FUNDS will go back to the Bonnie Brae community!

Visit our donation site and make a payment by check, credit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay today! https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/341b5732-1c1b-4d0b-97d0-6bc84b98d520

NOTICE: Moving to Zeffy for all Payments/Donations

We are thrilled to announce that the PTO is moving payment and donation processing from PayPal to Zeffy! This site is safe, FREE, and allows us to easily track payments. Since PayPal charges a transaction fee, please discontinue use of PayPal moving forward.

One thing to note is that Zeffy requests an optional donation to their site since it is free to use. When using Zeffy, just remember to change the optional donation to their site to "Other" and the amount to $0 (see example below). While this is indeed a small extra step compared to the previous process, the move to Zeffy will significantly improve the administrative work being done by volunteers behind the scenes, offer credit card payment options, and we won't lose any money to processing fees!!!

We appreciate your support as we work to automate processes, increase payment options, and ensure more funds go directly to our community.
