Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is a busy and fun year for students. Students are continuing to work on and refine their executive functioning skills. There is also focus on growing fifth grader's Portrait of a Graduate (POG) skills. Students are working hard to be collaborators, communicators, and goal-driven learners. Fifth graders will work to have a deeper understandings of concepts in both Math and Reading.
In Language Arts, students work on-
- Organization in writing
- Grammar and mechanics
- Reading comprehension skills
- Research
- Oral speaking skills
In Math, students focus on
- Fractions and decimals
- Geometry and measurement
- More complex problem-solving and practical problems
Science is also emphasized in fifth grade. Students will take the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) science test on top of the material learned in fourth grade. New topics will include the fifth grade content in the areas of:
- Landforms
- Oceans
- Light and sound
- Fields of science
Social Studies will explore:
- Ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, China, Greece, and Europe
- Global Awareness Technology Project- Studying interdependence and interrelationships of Ancient Civilizations and modern day cultures.
