Hello, Scottie families!

What a great week of learning, capped off with our SCA Spirit Day today - Decades Day!  Our students and staff brought the joy and creativity today, and we appreciate all who participated in our spirit day, or those who wore Autism Acceptance shirts and/or Bonnie Brae blue and white.

We are looking forward to Staff Appreciation Week, coming up May 6-10.  Please consider signing up to donate here, or provide the gift of time during recess to our teachers here.

We are excited that Bonnie Brae's renovation is underway.  This week site work began on our ballfield that will house the contractor's trailer and equipment, and fencing has been placed around the area where our two-story addition will be added.  We will continue to share updates with the community as we receive them.  Be sure to click here for more details on our school renovation project!

A reminder that there is a teacher workday next week on Friday, May 3, and all Fairfax County Public Schools are closed.

Have a great evening, and a wonderful weekend with your family!

A few amazing highlights that happened this week...

The big machines arrived and started the renovation process outside!

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

As we approach the end of the school year, it’s important for students to stay engaged, attend school, and finish strong! Visit our website for attendance resources. As we shared last week, we will be giving weekly absenteeism updates.  As of April 26, 2024, Bonnie Brae's absenteeism rate for the year is 14.5%.  Be sure to send your child to school when healthy, and help us continue to decrease our overall percentage of students who are considered chronically absent (as a reminder, chronic absenteeism is missing 10% or more of days in a school year, regardless of excused or unexcused).

Parent Input for Next Year's Class Placement

We are getting ready to discuss class placement for the 2024-25 school year and would appreciate parent/guardian input for consideration during these discussions. If you would like to provide input, please complete this form by May 10, 2024. We look forward to continuing this collaboration with you and your children to best support their learning needs.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

SOL Testing at Bonnie Brae-Begins May 2nd

Spring Standards of Learning (SOL) standardized tests in reading, mathematics, and science take place in May. The FCPS Grade Level Tests webpage provides information by grade level about the general assessment schedule and reporting method for each required assessment type in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). If you have questions about SOLs, contact your child's teacher or Natalie Vershaw, school test coordinator.

Parent Information Phone Lines Available in Eight Languages

Parents/caregivers who speak Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, or Vietnamese may call a telephone information line for general information about FCPS. View the list of phone numbers.

A few amazing highlights that happened this week...

Purple Up Day at Bonnie Brae!

Chronic Absenteeism - State Board of Accreditation

Last school year, the Virginia Board of Education decided to not suspend chronic absenteeism as part of school accreditation determinations. The Board’s rationale was a desire to send a strong message to schools, families, and students about the importance of regular attendance for student success. The Board decision means that schools with Level 3 (red) in any indicator—including chronic absenteeism—based on end-of-year data will receive “Accredited with Conditions” designation.

Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason.  A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10%.

As of April 18th, 15.4% of Bonnie Brae students are currently considered chronically absent, which is above the state threshold of 15% (of total students).  As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can join other Robinson pyramid schools in having an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate that is below 15%.

Did you know?

  • Regular school attendance in grades preschool through grade 6 makes it more likely that your child will read on grade level.
  • The 2024-25 school year calendar has been published and we highly recommend scheduling vacations around the school year calendar.
  • Even excused absences interfere with learning.
  • A pattern of absences (whether unexcused or excused) is one of the main reasons children have lower academic achievement.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
  • Absences can mask deeper struggles. For example; absences may be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, he or she may be struggling with school work or peer relationships, or possibly facing a medical or mental health concern.

Support is available:

All staff members at Bonnie Brae are committed to supporting attendance. Additional resources can be found online at http://www.fcps.edu/attendance. We know that parents are the experts on their own child and our school team is here to partner and help solve attendance-related concerns.  Our school counselors, school social worker, and family liaison are available to support:

Lisa Jeffries, school counselor, [email protected]

Cori Lonnett, school counselor, [email protected]

April Bowman, social worker, [email protected]

Santanisha Chang, family liaison, [email protected]

Spring picture day was a success!

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s counselor.

SOL Testing at Bonnie Brae

Spring Standards of Learning (SOL) standardized tests in reading, mathematics, and science take place in May. The FCPS Grade Level Tests webpage provides information by grade level about the general assessment schedule and reporting method for each required assessment type in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). If you have questions about SOLs, contact your child's teacher or Natalie Vershaw, school test coordinator.

Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) School Health Services Internal Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians of FCPS students. Parents/guardians will be asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024. Survey link: www.redcap.link/FCHDSchoolHealthSurvey.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of School Health services. The data-driven process is in alignment with the FCPS Strategic planning process, and the survey results will contribute positively to the FCPS Strategic Plan that reflects a shared consensus among stakeholders.

Summer Arts Camp

Don’t miss out on this summer’s most exciting arts enrichment program! At Elementary Institute for the Arts (E-IFTA), students take art, music, theater, and dance classes daily. E-IFTA is for current second through fifth grade students. Learn more on the E-IFTA webpage. Email [email protected] with any questions.

Nominate Someone Today for the Bussey Memorial Equity Award

Do you know of an outstanding person or group that has worked for equity in an FCPS school?  There’s still time to nominate a candidate for the 2024 Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award.

This award recognizes staff, students, or community members who have demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved.

Any FCPS employee, student, or community member may nominate an individual or group for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Wednesday, May 1. Full details are available on the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award webpage.

Community Forums on Middle School Start Times

FCPS is exploring options for adjusting middle school start times and invites the public to be part of the process. All forums will deliver the same presentation and provide the same feedback opportunities. Register for an in-person forum by clicking on one of the following dates:

A virtual forum will be held on Monday, May 13, 6:30-8 p.m. That registration link will be available soon.

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact our family liaison, Santanisha Change, at [email protected] regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Religious Accommodations in Schools for Students webpage for more information.

Donate Your Eclipse Glasses

A local eyeglass retailer is collecting used eclipse glasses to donate to other places in the world for future solar eclipses. They are doing this in partnership with Astronomers Without Borders, an organization that has been sending solar glasses for annular and total solar eclipse events since 2008. From Africa, Asia, North and South America, Astronomers Without Borders members, partners and National Coordinators have helped to bring glasses to people who may not otherwise have a safe way to view an eclipse directly. Travelers from the United States graciously volunteer to bring the glasses in their luggage and hand them out to local educators and organizers of public viewing events.

If you would like to donate any eclipse glasses, please have your student bring them to school and drop them off in the box in the main office by Friday, April 19.

Give Your Feedback on the Budget

We are now in the middle of the annual budget process, which includes opportunities for you to give feedback:

  • Tuesday, April 16, through Thursday, April 18: The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors conducts public hearings on the county budget. Sign up to speak.
  • Tuesday, May 7: The County Board of Supervisors adopts its budget, tax rates, and transfer amount to FCPS.
  • Tuesday, May 14: The School Board holds a public hearing on the FCPS budget.
  • Thursday, May 23: The School Board adopts FCPS’ approved budget.

Participants may also join online sessions, which will provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

Hello, Scottie families!

We hope you and your family enjoyed a rejuvenating Spring Break and are now ready for an exciting 4th quarter of school. Thank you to all the families who joined us on Tuesday for our Kindergarten Orientation, and to our kindergarten team and specialists for organizing this event for our newest Scotties! If you were unable to attend, please see our website for details on registering your child for the 2024-2025 school year.

Exciting news...we have been able to secure approved eclipse viewing eyewear for all Bonnie Brae students to use on Monday, April 8. See below for details and safe viewing practices.

Next week we are looking forward to our "This is Us!" celebration of our community and families, on Thursday, April 11, from 5:30-7 PM.  See this flyer for information on how to sign-up to share.  We invite all of our families to attend, whether to share your culture and heritage, or to enjoy the fun of celebrating and connecting with the Bonnie Brae community.  Be sure to plan to attend this special event!

A reminder that as the weather warms up, we rely on your support to ensure all our Scotties are present and engaged in learning every day. Attendance matters, and we want all our students to be a part of the exciting learning opportunities coming up.  Let's make the most of this final quarter of the year!

Enjoy the weekend with your family and friends!

A few amazing highlights that happened this week...

Renovation has started and the students are so curious about the process!

Ms. Connelly's class is smiling, even on a really rainy day!

Renovation Update

Over Spring Break work began on the vacated wing of the building, which is now closed off from the inside to the rest of the building for safety.  In the coming weeks our contractor will be placing their construction trailer and equipment on the small ball field near the parking lot (the left front field as you face the fields from the parking lot).  We will continue to share renovation updates with the community as we receive them, but we are excited that the project has started.  Expected completion of the project remains summer of 2026.  For more information, please see the FCPS Bonnie Brae website here.

Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience. Learn more about Month of the Military Child and FCPS’ resources for military families.

School Library Week and Month

April is School Library Month (and April 7-13 is National Library Week) and it's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. They support learning across all subject areas by teaching students the skills to be independent problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs.

Take a moment to learn more about FCPS Library Programs and share your appreciation of your school librarian!

Autism Acceptance Month

April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. Our schools and staff play a vital role in creating and ensuring inclusive environments that accommodate and affirm autistic students.

Solar Eclipse - Safe Viewing at Bonnie Brae!

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Bonnie Brae, we have been able to collect approved eyewear so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear.  We plan to have students go outside with their teachers shortly before dismissal to see the eclipse.  While we will have approved eyewear, we understand that some families may prefer to pick their child up early from school on this day, to experience the eclipse as a family or for safety reasons.  Please be sure to send your child to school on Monday, and let their teacher know if you plan to pick up your child before the end of the day.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

This Is Us! Event - April 11th!

We are excited to see our Bonnie Brae families at our "This Is Us! - A Celebration of Our Community of Families" event on Thursday April 11th,    5:30 pm-7 pm.

Advertised Budget Focuses on Schools and Instruction

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education.

Only 5% of the advertised budget is for general support and central administration. Central office administrators represent only 0.8% of total full-time positions.

For more details on FCPS’ advertised budget, view budget documents, including the FY 2025 Budget Book.

Check out the Budget Calendar for important dates in the budget process as well as opportunities for the community to provide feedback.

Families are encouraged to contact [the principal/family liaison/their child’s teacher] regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Religious Accommodations in Schools for Students webpage for more information.

Families are encouraged to contact Santanisha Change, [email protected], regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.

Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Summer Camp for Middle Schoolers

All rising middle schoolers are invited to attend a summer of fun and leisure with VIP Camp. VIP Camp — which takes place Monday, July 1, to Thursday, August 1 — is designed to encourage teens to develop healthy and positive recreation interests and features a wide variety of leisure activities and programs.

Registration is open. VIP Camp costs $100 to attend. Reach out to your school's after-school specialist for scholarship availability due to financial hardship. This camp is sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools and Fairfax County’s Department of Neighborhood and Community Services.

Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

Fun Run - Thank you Scotties!!!

To all our Scottie families, teachers, staff, admin and front office team, to the hard working small-but-mighty team of volunteers who helped coordinate all of the logistics, and to all our donors... we would like to say a huge THANK YOU for helping make this Bonnie Brae Fun Run Fundraiser such a MASSIVE success!

We raised more than $25,000 for Ongoing Scottie Support (i.e. assemblies, technology, field trips, PTO sponsored events, staff appreciation, and more). This will directly impact our students and staff!  Our students ran thousands of laps combined to help our school!  We celebrated our community coming together and created unforgettable memories at our Bonnie Brae Fun Run event.

Thanks to everyone for your support! We love our our Bonnie Brae Community and are so grateful for each and every one of you

P.S. The giving portal will remain open until Monday, March 25th. If you’d like to continue to give and share, head to MYBOOSTER.COM today.
